here are the perfect things about Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon
1. It rehabilitates a pretty fucked up fairy tale. Mermaid alternates perspectives between the original protagonist and the villainous ~other woman~ (who tells the prince she rescued him, marries him, and causes the little mermaid’s death by foam). So the entire book is about their separate and mutual loves and desires and goals, and ultimately about their relationship
2. which is kind of gay. I mean, I don’t want to be the girl who cried gay, but GAY GAY GAY. Each woman is completely fascinated by the other, and the human woman is outright in love with the mermaid woman and imagines she is sexing the mermaid woman when she is sexing the prince
3. the prince, who even cares? This book doesn’t.
4. It somehow perfectly captures what is enchanting about mermaids (at least if you are me and you are weirdly obsessed with mermaids)— what it would be like to encounter a mermaid, how it would change your relationship with God and the earth and your own body to see something magic and impossible.
5. Seriously, this book is really gay.
